Dear Parent/Carer,
Year 8 First Give Charity Project
I am writing to let you know that all Year 8 students will soon be taking part in an exciting programme called First Give. The First Give project is designed to help young people understand social issues in their community and develop the skills and confidence to make a positive difference.
Over the next two modules during their tutor sessions, students will work in teams to research local charities and social causes. They will learn about the challenges these organisations address and explore how communities can support those in need. As part of the project, students will choose a charity that they feel passionate about and develop a campaign to support it.
Throughout the programme, students will:
- Research social issues affecting their community
- Learn about the work of local charities and voluntary organisations
- Develop teamwork, communication, and presentation skills
- Plan and deliver a short presentation about their chosen charity
At the end of the project, students will present their work in a tutor group First Give Final, where they will share what they have learned and explain why their chosen charity deserves support. One group will be selected to receive a £1,000 grant for their charity, provided through the First Give programme.
The project encourages students to think critically about social responsibility, empathy, and community engagement. It also gives them the opportunity to develop their Approaches to Learning, such as research, thinking and social skills.
If you have any questions about the programme or would like to learn more, please do not hesitate to get in touch via email at eleanor.parsons@halley.latrust.org.uk.
Yours faithfully,
Eleanor Parsons
