Dear Parent/Carer,

Year 9 Community Project

This academic year, your child is completing the final year of their IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).  A key element of the curriculum involves actively engaging in service learning.  In Year 9, students complete their service learning through opportunities within the curriculum, as well as through the MYP Community Project. This is a very exciting opportunity for students to utilise the attributes of an MYP learner to increase their global awareness and become independent learners. Students are given the ownership to choose a project that is of personal interest and address a need within their chosen community.

Your child will receive tailored Community Project sessions which will be delivered by their tutor through a variety of weekly tutor time sessions. To succeed in the project, students need to utilise time in school and at home.  Students will be given an online workbook where they will document their project journey from start to finish.

The Community Project is formally assessed using four criteria similar to those for the MYP subjects. These criteria culminate in an overall MYP grade out of seven. The students’ Community Project grade will appear on their final Year 9 report, and their achievements will be recognised at a celebration event at the end of module 6.

I would like to thank you in advance for the support you give to your child whilst they are progressing through their Community Project journey.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries via email at eleanor.parsons@halley.latrust.org.uk.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs E Parsons
