Hot Weather Adaptations

Dear Parent and Carer,

Hot Weather Adaptations – Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd July 2025

As you may be aware, extremely high temperatures are forecast for Monday and Tuesday next week, with conditions expected to exceed 30°C. In line with our approach in previous years, we will be making a number of temporary adaptations to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff during this period.

Uniform Adaptations

On both Monday and Tuesday this week, we will be relaxing our usual uniform expectations. Students may attend the Academy in their full Academy PE kit, which is more appropriate for the hot weather. This will help ensure they remain as cool and comfortable as possible during the school day.

This includes:

Leigh Academy Halley PE polo shirt, plain black shorts (no branded shorts and shorts must be of an appropriate length for school) and trainers.

Please note, that this does not include:

Leggings, tracksuit bottoms, tight fitting cycling/legging style shorts, non sports shorts, hooded tops, flip flops, sandals, crocs or sliders.

These adaptations are a temporary measure in response to the extreme weather. Our standard summer uniform expectations will likely resume on Wednesday, when temperatures are forecast to return to more typical levels.

Students are, of course, able to still wear their Academy uniform, if they prefer. If they choose to wear their uniform, students can remove their ties, and have their top button open.

For Sixth Form students, we will also relax their attire. Year 12 students can wear shorts, plain t-shirts and trainers, or can remain in their usual attire. The same restrictions above also apply to Year 12 students.

Keeping Cool and Safe on Site

We are fortunate that our Academy site is over 16 acres, with lots of outdoor space, history, charm and character.

To support students during the hotter weather:

  • Indoor spaces such as the Restaurant and the Library will be open during break and lunch for students who wish to stay out of the sun.

  • We will be making adjustments to our PE curriculum to minimise time spent outdoors and ensure that physical activity remains safe in the heat.

  • We continue to have water refill stations located throughout the building, and students are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle with them each day to stay hydrated.

Travelling to and from the Academy

If your child travels to and from the Academy via public transport or on foot, we encourage you to remind them to:

  • Wear sunscreen and a hat during their journey.

  • Carry a water bottle to stay hydrated while travelling, particularly given the high temperatures expected.

Sports Day and Looking Ahead

We are continuing with plans for Sports Day on Friday this week, which we hope will go ahead as scheduled. We will continue to monitor the forecast and will communicate any changes if required.

Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a safe and productive learning environment during this period of exceptional weather.

Yours faithfully,

Ben Russell | Principal
